Homemade Tahini sauce adds extra flavor to sandwiches, wraphummus, and other Middle Eastern dishes like mutable or shawarma.

However, if you’re going to buy it at the store, it can be pretty expensive depending on where you live and the brand you purchase.

Origin Of Tahini Sauce

The origin of tahini is from Middle Eastern cuisine. Homemade tahini is made by grinding sesame seeds (which are pressed for their oil) into a thick sauce or paste.

To make the tahini sauce, simply mix tahini with lemon juice, garlic, and salt until it reaches your desired consistency.

Uses Of Tahini Sauce

roasted sesame seed
  • Traditionally served with grilled fish or meat.
  • Used as a base of dips, and dressings like beet dips.
  • They are used as the main ingredient when making hummus and mutable.
  • Cook with roasted garlic and yogurt served as an accompaniment with foul madams.
  • Used as a spread on bread for chicken shawarma, and vegetable wraps.Especially it goes well with carrot salad and raw veggies.

You may not want to use homemade tahini sauce in stir-fries because its thickness makes it hard to cook correctly. Instead, you can add a little olive oil to thin out your sauce and make it easier for cooking.

Is Homemade Tahini Sauce Vegan?

True tahini sauce is vegan, but it can also be mixed with yogurt or milk. If you’re trying to keep a vegan diet, avoid mixing dairy products into your tahini sauce and opt for a soy milk-based version instead. When you see tahini on a menu, it’s easy to assume that it’s a purely vegan ingredient.

Can Be It Freeze?

Yes, you can freeze homemade tahini sauce; however, you mustn’t let it sit in your freezer for more than one month.

Because the tahini is made from sesame seeds, which contain high oil levels, when left in a freezer, these oils tend to form crystals that solidify into white spots on the surface of your sauce.

Most people find them too unsightly and off-putting to continue using. If you decide to freeze some sauce, be sure you eat it within 15 days or make smaller batches, so they thaw quickly and taste fresh.

How To Store?

Homemade tahina sauce
  1. Homemade tahini sauce will stay fresh for about a week if stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator.
  2. If your kitchen is very warm, it might spoil before that time, so feel free to make smaller batches if you don’t think you’ll use it up right away.
  3. Homemade tahini sauce freezes well—thaw it out in your fridge and use it as needed.
  4. It can be an excellent way to batch-prep meals when cooking ahead is tough.
  5. To defrost frozen tahini sauce, just put it in a sealed plastic bag and place it in a bowl of warm water (never submerge any part of the container).
  6. After about 30 minutes, it should be soft enough for you to squeeze out what you need; repeat if necessary.
