Chicken Skewers with Indian Spices Recipe

Chicken skewers and shrimp skewers, has evolved in preparation and ingredients over the years, but it remains one of the most popular non-veg dishes enjoyed worldwide today. Whether you’re grilling at home or out on the town, the chicken skewer is easy to make and versatile enough to be served at every meal, including breakfast!

The chicken skewers recipe are very easy to prepare in one pan or on the grill, making a great family dinner. You can marinate them with Indian spices and lime juice, then use mustard oil for cooking them on the grill or you can fry them in a pan.

They’re simple and very tasty. Plus, chicken’s an excellent source of lean protein, so they’re also great for your health! Best to serve 6 to 8 people as part of a larger meal but can also be served on their own as an appetizer if you want to serve it to guests at a party.

These chicken skewers with Indian spices are ideal if you’re planning an Indian themed dinner party, but they can also work as part of a summer barbecue – serve with kachumber salad and naan bread, and people will be very impressed! You can also use the same recipe to make beef skewers, so experiment with different meats if you want to try something new.

Choose the marinade for chicken skewers


Choose your best marinade before beginning to prepare for Chicken skewers. It would help if you used a store-bought or homemade Indian marinade.

The best marinades consist of lime juice, mustard oil, garam masala, ginger and garlic paste and ground cumin. Mix all ingredients in a bowl or liquidizer and apply on skewers.

Leave them in the refrigerator for at least one hour to marinate properly. This process is also known as tenderizing chicken skewer recipes until they are ready to be grilled over an open flame or stovetop grill pan.


Coat them with any leftover marinade while they’re cooking so that they absorb more flavor.

Chicken skewers should be eaten fresh but can be refrigerated for up to three days. The chicken skewer can be kept for a few days in an airtight container and frozen for one month.

To freeze, you should wrap each chicken skewer in wax paper before placing it in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag.

It would be best to label your container or bag as per your storage instructions.

It’s better to thaw frozen food gradually in the refrigerator until it reaches room temperature and then cook as normal.

If you cook it straight from a frozen state, it will taste different and won’t have that just-cooked flavour.

Serves four people, 2 to 3 skewers per person. A light accompaniment can be potato wedges or grilled vegetables. But these skewers are also great served along with dips such as ketchup, yoghurt sauce, cilantro sauce or even a green chutney.

Or you can add diced vegetables to your skewers. You can also wrap vegetable slices around the chicken, so they don’t burn as quickly. Veggies can even be cooked on skewers alone, a great alternative if you don’t like meat or are looking for a healthy dinner option.

  • 12 oz Chicken leg (boneless)

  • Make the marinades
  • 1/2 cup Mustard Oil

  • 1/2 tbsp Paprika

  • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste

  • 1/4 tbsp Turmeric powder

  • 1/2 tbsp Garam Masala

  • 1/2 tbsp Roasted Cumin Powder

  • 1/2 tbsp Coriander powder

  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

  • 1/2 tbsp Chat Masala

  • 1/2 tbsp Salt

  • Make Cilantro Sauce
  • A handful of fresh coriander

  • Small diced ginger

  • 3-4 Garlic cloves

  • 1-2 Whole red chillies

  • 1 tbsp Tamarindm pulp (seedless, unsalted)

  • 1/2 tbsp Chat Masala

  • 1/2 tbsp Salt


  • Clean the chicken and soak it in lime juice and salt for half an hour to 45 minutes. Dice into pieces about two inches long, three-quarters of an inch thick, then remove any bones that you find.
  • In a bowl, make a marinade with mustard oil, salt, paprika, yogurt, cumin powder, garam masala, lemon juice, coriander powder, ginger garlic paste, and chat masala. Mix well, and keep aside.

  • Then Strain the chicken, add the marinade, coat well, skewer and keep aside for another 10 to 15 minutes. Slice into pieces about two inches long, three-quarters of an inch thick.

  • Preheat the grill pan. To grill chicken on a grill pan, preheat the grill to lightly oil the grate. When the grill is hot, cook the kabobs, turning them occasionally, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F or 74°C. Or cook for approximately 6-10 minutes, depending on their thickness.

  • When it is cooked well, remove it from the pan. To serve, arrange them on a platter or serve them individually. You can garnish them with thinly sliced red onion and cilantro. To add extra flavor to your kebabs, you can drizzle some smoky aioli over them and serve.
